This week, in order to extend my learning on Going Beyond Presentations, I decided to do something completely different from Google Slides. Instead, I created a Prezi presentation. Apparently, Prezi has been updated and is now called Prezi Next. I have minimal experience with the classic version of Prezi, so learning the new version was basically starting over. Thankfully, Youtube is always there for me when I learn something new. I found this video to be very helpful. Incidentally, the video was from the Technology for Teachers and Students Youtube channel, which looks like it may be a good channel to subscribe to for future reference. The video pointed out that you can sign up for a free student account with Prezi that gives you more options than the regular free account does.
Overall, I found creating the Prezi to be easier than in the past with the classic version. The main difficulty I had was with editing subtopics. I could never figure out how to get to the zoomed in subtopic to edit it. I had to "present" so I could navigate to the page, and then click on ESC to stop presentation mode and edit the subtopic. I would like to find a way to directly navigate to the subtopic page in edit mode, without using presentation mode. I also was frustrated with the background, because there is a white stripe on the left that I cannot figure out how to fix. Fortunately, that is just a picky issue and doesn't affect the presentation very much.
I chose to do a book introduction for the class when starting a new novel. I got the idea from the English, Oh My! blog. The teacher who writes the blog did a Prezi to go through an entire novel. I started by finding a background image that relates to the theme of the book. Then, on a pad of paper, I sketched the different topics I wanted to address. I chose which items should be subtopics, rather than topics, and then numbered the order that each grouping should appear in the presentation.
Here is a link to the full Prezi where you can present and scroll through all of the topics and subtopics, and here is a screen shot of the opening screen:
This is a screen shot of one of the topics.
I love how this turned out. I think it adds a little interest and novelty in the way we present things to students.

First, i really enjoyed your post as it gave great information and insight to your process and project. I appreciate the links to resources as well.
ReplyDeleteSecod, your Prezi was very well constructed and was rich with opportunities to learn. I did find myself fascinated and enjoyed the personal touch of your photo with the author Katherine Applegate.
Glad you enjoyed the photo. It was so fun to be able to meet her, and I love sharing those things with students!
DeleteThis was such a good presentation! I really enjoyed going through it. I like how it was set up and it was very easy to navigate. I also liked that you added an exit ticket and anticipation guide to your presentation. Well done!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
